Tips for Taking Care of Jewelry

The information presented here is intended to give some widely accepted tips on the best ways to take care of your jewelry. If you are in doubt about what materials your jewelry is made of, have a professional jeweler take a look at it before using any cleaners or polishes. Using the wrong product may do more harm than good.

General Jewelry Care

Here are some basics to remember to help any type of jewelry last longer:

> Keeping jewelry dry is a number one priority. Remove jewelry when showering or bathing. Remove rings, watches and bracelets when you are using any cleaners and keep all jewelry away from any harsh chemicals. Remove jewelry before swimming, as chlorine can cause major damage.

> Try to protect jewelry from scratches and extreme temperatures. Remove rings when doing housework, gardening or other tasks involving manual labor.

> The best way to store jewelry (except pearls) is to place it in airtight plastic bags and place an anti-tarnish strip in the bag for extra help in preventing discoloration. Don’t throw away the little silicone packs that come in packages containing items sensitive to dampness. These are great to place in your jewelry boxes to help keep jewelry dry.

> Hair spray, lotions, etc. can cause discoloration of the finish on your jewelry. Put on your jewelry after applying these products.

> Sunlight will fade beads and crystals.

> If you need to remove dirt and debris from crevices in jewelry, use an extra soft brush, such as a baby’s toothbrush and use lightly to avoid scratching the metal. Do not brush stones or beads, as their surfaces may be easily scratched.

> If you use any jewelry cleaners, polishes, cloths, or any other jewelry care products, read the label to make sure it is safe for use on the types of materials used in your jewelry and follow the directions carefully. If these products are used improperly or applied to materials they are not intended for, the jewelry may be ruined.
